Localizing Pixel Connectivity: a cross-market research deep-dive
OBJECTIVES
Uncover regional nuances in connectivity experiences (e.g., Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Cellular Data) to drive localized product improvements.
Benchmark Pixel’s connectivity performance against competitors and diverse operating systems across 3 identified major markets.
IMPACTS
Inform regional connectivity benchmarking strategy
Identified regional nuance as the primary driver of connectivity behavior; benchmarked 1,520 user responses across the 3 markets to inform Pixel Connectivity localization.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
METHODS
Survey + Localization
Goal
Validate and quantify qualitative insights from previous ethnographic study in TW market
Establish a periodic benchmarking study to track connectivity performance and satisfaction of Google Pixel
Approach
Survey Design & Stakeholder Alignment
I developed a comprehensive survey framework rooted in core research objectives and team-validated insights. To ensure technical and strategic accuracy, I led cross-functional syncs with Product Managers and Engineers to align study goals with the product roadmap.
Localized Cultural Adaptation
Beyond translation, I utilized Google Gemini to refine the narrative, ensuring the tone was relatable and that regional vocabulary nuances were accurately captured for each market.
Demographic Contextualization
Recognizing that connectivity is a universal experience heavily influenced by local environments, I localized demographic questions to account for regional differences in lifestyle and infrastructure.
More details are NDA protected. Reach out if you'd love to know how I did survey localization for three markets within a month :)
REFLECTIONS
Connectivity is a highly technical domain where a user’s mental model often diverges significantly from the underlying technology. Because of this gap, driving alignment with Engineering teams is exceptionally critical.
As a UX Researcher, I acted as a bridge between developers and end-users. My biggest takeaways from my time at Google centered on two key challenges:
Reframing technical inquiries into natural, relatable scenarios for users.
Translating user feedback into actionable technical insights for engineers.
Mastering this translation layer was the most rewarding aspect of the project.
